ISLA COCOS

JEWELLED PHOENIX

2023 bronze award for design for platinum jewellery sponsored by Hafner, at the Goldsmiths Craft Council Award.

The Phoenix symbolises hope, rebirth, and transformation. Passionate & fiercely loyal, the Emerald Ring is protected by the Impenetrable diamond encrusted wings. Worn individually, symbolising Love & Protection, or worn together becoming greater than the sum of their parts.

Green Emerald & White round brilliant & pear cut diamonds, are upcycled laser infilled, supporting sustainable practices. Platinum has been chosen for this design due to its improved material strength, platinum content & specular finish. 18ct Red gold has been chosen to complement & contrast the Emerald Green Hues & infiltrate the Platinum Wings.

SLM supports large geometrically complex builds, whilst improving the microstructure, creating a stronger & specular surface. Implicit modelling of the pattern on the wings supports light weighting, mass customisation & product personalisation.

ISLA COCOS

2021 silver award for Design for Precious Metal Direct Printing at the Goldsmiths Craft Council Award

Isla Cocos, an innovative collection Inspired by Oceanic themes of the Cephalopods internal mantle & sweeping tentacles, the Self-supporting organic structures of Coral, the Chitinous Carapace of Crustaceans, the rotational symmetry of the Echinoderms Crown of Thorns, and the Conch’s Pink Nacre Salt Water Pearls, one of nature’s original biological additive manufacturers.

This small collection was designed with AM in mind, utilising the many benefits Selective Laser Melting technology has to offer designers. Innovations comprise of Bi-Material builds of 18ct white & 18ct Red Gold, and encaging heat sensitive pink Salt water pearls. Fluid articulation of the hollowed earrings, featuring an all-in-one build, and angled to minimise supports. Hollow builds, traditionally non-compatible with in-direct AM and investment Cast, are fully supported in powder bed fusion. Computational generation of fine organic Voroni structures. Fully customisable using parametric design, & material combinations.

MORPHO

2022 bronze award for Design for Precious Metal Direct Printing at the Goldsmiths Craft Council Award

This Cooksongold special award invited entrants to design a single, efficient and effective item of jewellery on the theme and influence of Art Nouveau to be specifically produced by Direct Precious Metal 3D Printing.

We wanted to create a homogeneous build, one that would cut down on labour time. To create a design for SLM technology is not the same as designing a piece for 3D printing. You have to think outside the box and ask yourself what would make this design ideal for this specific technology.

In the case of the Morpho Ring incorporated more than one benefit. The central head is able to rotate, it’s a hollow all-in-one build, that can be manufactured with pearls and stones during the printing process.

MATIS

2021 silver award for Conceptual Design at the Goldsmiths Craft Council Award.

Designing for Characters, this Conceptual Jewellery design brief intended to push the bounds of our imagination. Designs for a piece of jewellery or body adornment for a fictional character or a character of the entrant’s own invention was the theme.
Entrants were asked to defy the limits of what is creatively and physically possible and to craft their idea around the character’s story and world to make it truly unique to them.
